Targeting by Interests with Facebook Ads

Audience targeting is the not so secret weapon of Facebook advertising. It is the reason why 9 times out of 10 Facebook is the best place to put your advertising money. I would advise trying several audiences every time you run an ad.

At the beginning it is worth trying many separate audiences so that you can see from right from the start what works for you and what doesn’t. We will examine different types of audience, starting with the weakest, then moving in any direction I decide, because I write these tips, so I do what I want!

Let’s start with interests. If you have a Twitter account this is the perfect time to check out your Twitter Analytics data. From there you should have a list of 4 or 5 interest groups. After putting in the target audiences you want to target, Facebook will give you other suggestions. These suggestions may teach you a few things about your audience, so they are definitely worth looking over, maybe even using them in ads.

After you get a list of 7-8 interests to use start with separate small ad sets for each interest. This way you can learn how each one performs separately. Then, after you have made enough campaigns start combining interests groups together and dropping the ones that don’t perform as well.
